Root to Rise emerged as a collective desire to bridge the gap between food waste and fresh produce, partnering with local restaurants to turn scraps into seeds of change. Guided by the belief that every meal has a story, Root to Rise sets out to close the loop on waste and cultivate a greener, more vibrant future. Throughout this course, I have learned the techniques and skills in order to create digital, intentional art while learning how to advocate for a specific cause. This innovative class brought design into a field that helps create art for the designer but also for the benefit of society. In our world, everything comes at a price, but this class allowed us to create art with an even bigger purpose, and not just what might look good on a page. Visual Communication and Advocacy brought together the fundamentals of digital, graphic design, and intentional, useful forms of art to the community. In my own interpretation, advocacy refers to the public act of standing up for a specific reason, cause, or intention. Advocacy is a very useful term that has come into play within all of history, and it involves rising up and creating awareness about a certain topic. The reason this term is so important is because when we as humans want something, we go after it and try to give reasoning as to why we “need” this certain thing. Advocating for something can come in many different forms such as activism, organizing community gatherings, creating an idea or movement, public campaigning, and so on. The ultimate goal is to bring awareness and accountability to a said topic and while that can happen in many different ways, it plays a crucial role within our society. Designers specifically aim to create impactful spaces and areas that can contribute to the benefit of the world and also to themselves.
