Biodegradable Backpacks

Within this series, I explored constructing a backpack out of biodegradable materials. No glue or tape, just cardboard, plus one material of choice: I chose burlap. The backpack sits comfortably on an adult and is strong enough to carry 2 glass bottles of Topo Chico, one pair of shoes, one laptop charger, one pencil case, and two 8.5” x 11” sketchbooks.

The backpack opens and closes using a drawstring mechanism that I created by wrapping the burlap into tight, unified knots. The backpack is bound by one unbroken braid that carries the weight and transforms into straps, a drawstring, and a hanging loop. It also includes a snug spot for a water bottle.
